Accessories That Can Lead to Injury at the Gym

  1. Metal Rings could de-glove your fingers

Crossfit is as much about community as it is about fitness. So, its only natural that we would want to sport our commitment to relationships when we are at the box, but lifting in any form with a metal ring is exposing you to serious risk. Specifically, de-gloving your finger.  I wont include pictures of this injury on our blog because they are gruesome to say the least.  To sum it up, your ring gets caught on the bar/rig/kettle bell and proceeds to take your skin with it, essentially turning your skin inside out.  Luckily there’s no need to give up the symbolism of your commitment to relationships in the gym.

Companies like Qalo sell Silicone rings for both men and women in a variety of colors for only $20. Extra tip: You can easily de-glove you fingers while climbing too!

  2. Tying your shoes too tightly

Believe it or not, tying your shoes too tightly can cause shin splints, pain on the top of your foot and injuries to the tendons in your feet. According to Wendy Theall, one of Crossfit Sanitas’ gifted therapists, “it creates pull on your entire lower body and could result in crushed tendons, plantar fasciitis , numbness as well as several other foot issues.”

  3. Keep your hair up, not back

Boulder Crossfitters of both genders can suffer from this seldom considered injury. Putting your hair up in a pony tail isn’t enough. The variety of things that have caught hair include blenders, fans AND barbells — all while it was up in a safe pony tail. This may seem funny but considering the amount of weight some lift, this could become a terrifying scalp injury. Check out the video to get the full effect.

Hair ties are always available in the women’s locker room, but be sure to bring whatever you need to tie your hair back to avoid this injury.
