Shaye Patel
HEAD COACH
With nearly two decades of experience in the fitness industry, Shaye brings a world-class coaching pedigree to CrossFit Sanitas. As a CrossFit Level 3 Trainer Shaye has traveled the globe educating coaches and athletes, from leading international seminars in Madrid to running elite recovery and contrast therapy protocols for Power Monkey Camp. He has even spent time as a guest coach for the Green Bay Packers.
Shaye specializes in blending high-level CrossFit with hybrid endurance training (HYROX), advanced gymnastics, and XPT breathing and down-regulation protocols to ensure athletes not only perform at their peak but also recover like professionals. Relocating to Colorado from Miami, Shaye's coaching philosophy is built on "servant leadership"—removing roadblocks for athletes, elevating the coaching staff, and building an unbreakable community. When he isn't on the floor cueing a barbell or pacing a ski erg, you can find him on the golf course or reading a book in a coffee shop.

Dwight Upshaw
PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR & COACH
Dwight is an incredible coach with over 15 years of experience helping people get stronger, move better, and feel their best. He brings a rare combination of strength and endurance expertise, drawing from a lifetime of sports including D1 rowing at UC Berkeley, competing on the national championship winning team in triathlons at Berkeley, and also, football, track, and swimming.
He’s also the lead programmer for PRVN, the global training system founded by CrossFit legend Tia-Clair Toomey, and followed by over 600 gyms worldwide. At Sanitas, Dwight adapts that experience specifically for Boulder athletes — creating seasonal progressions designed around your goals, lifestyle, and performance needs.
He lives in Boulder with his wife, their two young boys and his dog Penny. His coaching style is focused, positive, and rooted in helping you make long-term progress.

Sara-Marie Ellis
COACH
Growing up on the East Coast, Sara-Marie spent 15 years as a competitive gymnast. Her gymnastics journey was cut short by a career ending injury. However, that challenge opened the door to a new love—coaching. Sara-Marie found immense joy in helping others reach their potential, emphasizing the importance of good movement and technique for safety and injury prevention.
Once Sara-Marie found CrossFit, she knew she was hooked and coaching soon became her passion. She’s dedicated to helping others achieve their goals, pushing them to be their best while ensuring they stay safe and strong

Zac Chavez
COACH & STRENGTH SPECIALIST
Zac is the kind of coach who’s done it all — wrestler, national-level MMA fighter, CrossFit athlete, and world-record-holding Olympic lifter. After 8 years competing in MMA and coaching fighters, he found CrossFit as the perfect complement to his training. By 26, he had fully transitioned into CrossFit as both an athlete and coach.
In 2023, he completed the Masters Weightlifting Grand Slam — winning Nationals, Pan Ams, Worlds, and American Masters — and set an American clean & jerk record in his weight class along the way. But what really sets him apart is his ability to coach athletes of all levels with intensity, humor, and care. Today, Zac runs the Sanitas Strength program, blending his deep technical knowledge of Olympic lifting and gymnastics with his passion for movement and mindset.
He lives in Longmont with his wife (who he met at a CrossFit competition) and their three daughters.

Lori Cooper
COACH & BUSINESS MANAGER
Lori Cooper was raised in Buffalo NY and moved to Boulder for graduate school and more importantly, to play in the mountains. She met her husband at CU and they started an endurance lifestyle together. They started with marathons and then competed in their first mountain trail ultra marathon in 2003. After her two beautiful girls were born, the Cooper family moved to the East Coast and then on to Europe. Lori fell in love with CrossFit and began her coaching career when she lived in the Netherlands.
Lori's believes that the CrossFit methodology can help all achieve their fitness goals…from those looking to keep up with their grandkids to those athletes forging the competitive path. She is passionate about helping others on their fitness journey and believes that we are stronger together.

Eric Roza
CO-FOUNDER & COACH
Eric’s greatest passion in life is helping others to improve their lifelong fitness. He plans to be skiing bumps with his grandkids well into his 80s.
A 16 year CrossFitter, Eric is Sanitas’ leader and he also serves on the coaching staff. He led the 2020 buyout of CrossFit, Inc the world’s largest gym brand, and then served as Global CEO. Roza has also served on the boards of Sondermind (mental heath), Mindbody/ClassPass (gym management software and fitness membership program) and TrueCoach (leading app for personal trainers). As a tech CEO in a prior life, he sold Datalogix to Oracle in 2015.

Tyler Pensyl
COACH
Born and raised in Pennsylvania (go Birds!), Tyler discovered CrossFit after college and immediately fell in love with the combination of challenge, variety, and community it offered. Growing up, he spent most of his time outdoors or on the ice playing hockey, which helped shape his lifelong passion for movement and competition.
Outside the gym, Tyler works in natural resources biology and loves spending his free time exploring Colorado’s mountains with his wife. As a coach, he’s dedicated to helping every athlete—no matter their age or experience—find joy in the process, achieve lasting results, and build a foundation for a healthy, happy life both in and out of the gym.

Melissa Roza
CO-FOUNDER
Melissa founded CrossFit Sanitas with Eric in 2013. She was Sanitas’ full-time leader until 2021, establishing it as one of the US’s top CrossFit gyms and helping over 1,000 people improve their fitness. She continues to serve on the Sanitas leadership team while leading Vertile Foundation, a non-profit operating an orphanage and school in Haiti. With four kids, Melissa experiences the real-life time challenges mothers face every day.
Melissa is a CU grad, reformed investment banker and silicon valley tech professional. CrossFit Sanitas is her second entrepreneurial venture after running a destination wedding planning company in France and Italy.

Erica Giovinazzo
COACH
Erica Giovinazzo is a registered dietitian and CrossFit coach with 12+ years of experience. Originally from New Hampshire, she spent more than 20 years living in New York and Los Angeles, where she built her virtual private practice, Erica's Edge Nutrition & Training. Craving a return to nature, she relocated to Boulder with her goldendoodle Leo, drawn by her love for the mountains, hiking, camping, skiing, and more recently horseback riding/jumping.
Erica’s athletic background is in martial arts, tennis and as a collegiate fencer. In NYC, she started teaching yoga but discovered her true calling with CrossFit. Finding it transformed her perspective on fitness, showing her the power of strength and that our capabilities are limitless.

Dr. Hannah Lally
DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY
As a former CrossFit coach, kettlebell instructor, and yoga teacher, Dr. Hannah Lally brings a deep movement background to her work as a physical therapist and personal trainer—making her a natural fit for the CrossFit community.
Hannah began her career in 2011 teaching yoga in a CrossFit gym in New Hampshire. That experience sparked a passion for functional fitness and performance training, which led to nearly a decade of coaching and instructing before earning her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado.
Today, Hannah blends clinical expertise with a coach’s eye, supporting individuals at every stage of their athletic journey—whether they're dealing with nagging injuries, looking to hit their next PR, or getting started in the gym for the first time. She specializes in working with runners, cyclists, CrossFit athletes, and anyone training for healthspan and longevity. She is also trained in pelvic floor therapy and enjoys helping individuals improve core and pelvic floor function for better performance and quality of life.

Lao Kemper, LMT, CMT
MASSAGE THERAPIST
Trained in Seattle, Washington, Lao is a clinical massage therapist with over a decade of experience specializing in the treatment of acute and chronic pain patterns. His work is grounded in a detailed understanding of human anatomy and years of refining skilled palpation, allowing him to identify and address soft-tissue dysfunction with precision.
Clients often describe his work as “targeted,” “thoughtful,” and “effective,” frequently noting clear improvements in pain, mobility, and function after treatment. This anatomy-focused, results-driven approach has earned Lao ongoing referrals from doctors, dentists, mental health providers, physical therapists, and chiropractors who trust his manual therapy expertise.
Lao values helping people better understand their bodies and how pain patterns develop, so they can experience “real relief, not just temporary relaxation,” and move through life with greater ease and confidence.
Outside of his clinical practice, Lao enjoys spending time with his wife, son, and dog in the mountains, golfing, and maintaining a daily tai chi practice, which continues to inform his appreciation for movement, balance, and long-term physical health.
