Joy Kemna: August Member of the month

We’re thrilled to announce that Joy Kemna has been selected as our August Member of the Month!

One of the things we admire most about Joy is the positivity and warmth she brings into the gym. Whether it’s a regular class or someone’s first day, she shows up with kindness and a welcoming energy that instantly puts people at ease. In fact, whenever we have new members, she’s often the first person we think of to introduce them to — because we know she’ll make them feel right at home.

Congratulations, Joy! We’re beyond grateful to have you as part of the Sanitas community. Keep shining!

1.Tell us about yourself!

Originally a South Dakota girl, my husband and I moved to Colorado 25 years ago in search of like-minded community, educational opportunities and mountains! I am the mother of three children, ages 27, 21 and 16, and each of them brings me enormous pride. I am a bilingual educator in a dual language elementary school (Spanish/English) and I love language learning. I am currently studying German! I am also an avid gardener and hobby herbalist. I cultivate and wildcraft medicinal plants and have traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America to study traditional medicine.

2. What's your favorite part about being a member at Sanitas?

I love the Sanitas community. I feel seen, supported and challenged by coaches and members alike.

3. What’s one piece of advice you would give to yourself on your first day, knowing everything you know now?

I was lucky to get sage advice from Giancarlo on my actual first day. He told me, "keep showing up." It really does make all the difference! If there was one thing I could start doing sooner, it would be meal prepping. I resisted for a long time because of my busy life, but it has made a significant impact on my progress.

4. What’s one challenge you’ve overcome recently, and how did you push through?

One gym-related challenge that I've recently achieved was getting my first pull-up. The first thing I had to overcome was the mindset that I wouldn't ever be able to do one because all of the odds were against me. Prior to CrossFit, I didn't know any women who could do pull-ups, especially not any middle-aged, overweight women. Once I committed, it took me a full year of accessory work to get that first pull-up.

5.. What are 3 or more of your favorite movements? Along with, what are some numbers that are meaningful to you?

I like to feel strong! Deadlifts/bench press/squats are my favorite lifts. My birthday is cinco de mayo- the fifth of May- and I was born in 1977, so I've always loved 5s and 7s. I've also always thought 13 was a lucky number- 13 moons in a year, 13 segments on the turtles back- you know, all the hippie stuff!
