dylan muzny: october member of the month

We are thrilled to announce Dylan Muzny as our October Member of the Month at CrossFit Sanitas! Dylan is typically an afternoon guy (3:30, 4:30 or 5:30pm). Dylan brings a smile from the second he walks through the doors. Even when he’s a little scared of the workout, he still has a smile on his face, and that positivity never wavers throughout the hour. Dylan also brings a willingness to learn and grow. He loves feedback, is incredibly coachable, and consistently shows up with an eagerness to improve.

As part of his spotlight, we asked Dylan a few questions to get to know him better:

Tell us about yourself! Family, hobbies, where did you grow up?

My wife and I are both high school science teachers. We met in college in a biology class and now we teach one together!  We have two young boys with more energy than should be possible for things that small and a dog who I will love till the end of my days. I love doing things! There are so many things to do. Currently, my main hobbies are painting miniatures, playing board games, basketball, tennis, playing piano, and of course, surviving another hour at CrossFit Sanitas!

What’s your favorite thing about being a member at Sanitas?

The coaches and the community. I like nothing more than being turned into a barely-breathing pile of goo by coaches that are continually pushing me to be my best. Okay, that's a lie. There is one thing I like more. It is being turned into a barely-breathing pile of goo by coaches that are making fun of me while it happens!  People only razz you if they care. Thanks coaches, you know who you are ;). But don't worry, I won't tell management. I ain't no snitch!

What’s one piece of advice you would give to yourself on your first day, knowing everything you know now?

Ask questions! You are a clumsy giraffe who has trouble walking without tripping, so it is okay to ask the coaches how to do everything. They are wells of knowledge and must be carefully mined for their expertise. You are on the right track if you are asking so many questions that you get an eye roll as well as an expertly guided response.  Knowledge and proper technique is what keeps you safe and improving.  Also, even though you are terrible at lifting things over your head, keep doing it because eventually your wife will make nice comments to you about how your shoulders look.

What’s one challenge you’ve overcome recently, and how did you push through?

I thought my phone was snuffing out the fires of my creativity. If you're not bored, how can you create? How can you form meaningful connections? I have downgraded my phone by removing all social media and every app that has an algorithm and talks to the internet. If it is designed to keep you on it, it is not on my phone. This was extremely challenging at first, but now I will never go back. I am a lump of cells with one shot at sentience. I want to spend the time I have with family and friends. I want to explore the echoing chambers of my mind palace.  I guess like breaking any habit, you just wake up and do the best you can every day until you have broken free. You remind yourself why the change matters and keep trying.

What are 3 (or more) of your favorite movements?

Sprints. Absolute 10/10 see what you got sprints. Rower (pro tip- pretend you are a viking) and Bikes (the best, just pedal till your vision narrows, ez) are great, but I would also like to make a special call out to the ski-erg. Ski-erg, you are the worst machine. I flop around like an elephant continually bowing before an uncaring god and the calories never move forward. Please rot in whatever hell you came from.

What numbers are meaningful to you?

The only number that matters is the number of smiles I can create in a day.  Haha, kidding. 06/15/2045. That's the day an oracle told me I would run and row faster than coach Dwight. Sometimes you just have to live long enough to slay the gods that helped make you.

Thanks Sanitas! See you on the floor. Dip into that bucket of creativity and roast me if you see me!
